CMI Toyota & LCOOL's 2004 Double Simpson Desert Crossing

Day 4 - 8/7/04

We awoke to yet another cool but fine morning. Darren’s bugle call of midnight oil though his stereo at full volume ensured that all were awake to witness the beautiful sunrise. The dingos howled in appreciation

The convoy soon left and made good time as it headed west along the Rig road.

Mid morning saw us arrive at Dalhousie springs. The waters were very soothing to our muscles that have endured the last 3 days of bouncing across the Simpson. However the warmth of the water was soon forgotten when changing back into our clothes with a persistent breeze. “it really made you feel alive!”. After a pleasant lunch for all, the convoy then made its way to the intriguing Dalhousie Ruins.

We travelled to our camp site via a Ghan Railway site and all had set up for the night by 4pm.

For entertainment that evening, GC repaired a puncture and Norm “1” relocated a small forest of dead wood for our campfire. “I’m sure N.A.S.A reported spotting from the international space station”.

Overall another fantastic fun day for all.

Simon and Katie

Another glorious sunrise.... hard to take isn't it?

Darren and GG are up early to catch the sun rise. Pity it took them so long to get ready to leave for the day's drive.

Early morning finds Zac in his swag with flower in ear. About a generation too late Zac....

The lads were hungry....

The drive to Dalhousie took us through a good deal of standing water. Thankfully the track was dry.

Some of the gang fouling the hot water at Dalhousie Springs.

And still more about to foul it big time.

Mitch at the Dalhousie Ruins. Would you trust this man?

Zac and GC doing the family thing. It's a great trip for Father and Son.

Meandering through the old ruins at Dalhousie.

The old blacksmiths building was the best preserved.

The convoy parked around the romantic old wooden cattle yards.

The flag on Peter's 100 bends over from the force of the wind - and that from Zac.

Edmund, Dave and Darren talking men's talk. Edmund's leering is a bit of a worry though.

Norm and Kristen spent the day together in Norm's hot rod 79 Series.

GG gets all artistic with his photography through an open window at Pedirka.

A rather apt warning sign.

Norm's farm truck.

Darren crosses the grass covered gibber at Pedirka.

Pedirka railway siding. We camped a couple of km down the track.

GC copped a railway spike through a tyre as he went off collecting fire wood. The crowd that gathered was not unlike flies to poo.

If you ever want company, just lift the bonnet. Flies to poo again...

Zac spotted the camera.

Laughs aplenty at an impromptu nibbles and drinkies. We arrived at camp early and had plenty of time for fun.

Norm inspects Zac's handiwork with the camp fire.

The kids won prizes for collecting fire wood.

These two absolutely killed the rest when it came to fire wood.

Ivan sporting a shiny hairstyle as he prods fred flintstone sized steaks for dinner.

Norm's discussing some deep and meaningful issue as Ivan, Craig and Darren look on. Ivan's mixing Green Ginger Wine with his beer so Norm's probably making sense to him.

Craig wakes for the flash...

Mitch doesn't though. Poor old guy....

Blake and Zac take an audio channel each as Zac races around some track in a Porsche.

Darren grabs a moment of shut eye by the fire.

A final big burn pushed everyone back - except for Zac.

We had a graphic display of how to turn the above into that below.....

It was called a whoooshka.....

Fines by Mitch $1 donation to the Royal Flying Doctor

  • Dave some collected wood fell off his roof – no wonder we ran out of fire wood
  • Don had a tyre failure
  • John burning club magazine and other paper, covering everyone with ash
  • Helmet handbrake slightly on, caused him to stop thinking his car was on fire
  • George made comment on colour of Katie’s eyes and the nature of the beast
  • Mitch mistaking George for a cross between JC and Alfred E. Newman
