CMI Toyota & LCOOL's 2004 Double Simpson Desert Crossing

Day 3 - 7/7/04

After being regaled with stories by Darren, TJL and Greg of their LCOOL trip to USA a few years ago, round the camp fire last night, we woke to a cool 1 degrease sunrise.

Left the knolls camp at 0900 for easy run south to WAA line.

There were lots of dips in the track, giving shock absorbers a work out.

Katie in Prado at front of the convoy spotted a dingo in the distance and the kids found dingo tracks on the dune next to our lunch spot.

In the afternoon we travelled Rig rd which was clay covered and the travel pace increased greatly. This was good as it enabled us to get to Purni bore well before dark.

The shower from the bore waters was welcomed after a hard day for most of us.

George had a slide show on his computer of many great pictures so far taken on the trip while this was going on just away from the fire. A few people spotted a dingo.

John Phibbs

Early start for a big drive. The track south from the Knolls snakes its way through the dunes.

Edmund cresting a flower infested dune.

Ivan speeds past GC on a crusty salt pan.

Terry doing his stuff on salt.

The group stopped for lunch.

Terry and Mitch wheeling and dealing. Terry collected the money for the raffle.

Our convoy makes its way down the lumpy and bumpy WAA line.

Driver change for Simon and Katie in their 120 Series.

Edmund sneaks up as GC takes a photo.

The convoy with lights ablaze rolling over the lumps and bumps. At this stage there wasn't one vehicle who wasn't complaining of shocker fade.

Dave crests a dune.

Ivan does the same albeit at a great rate of speed.

The trusty 100s took it all in their stride.

GC was smitten with the curving dunes covered in wild flowers but with loose red sand on top. The scenery was in stark contrast to what is normally found in this part of the Simpson.

Nearing the end of the WAA line, the convoy catches up as Edmund packs his camera gear away.

There were still a few holes in the track to catch the unwary. GC gingerly drops into one.

Finally off the WAA line and onto the Rig Road for a dash to Purnie Bore and a hot shower.

GC couldn't resist a picture at George's Corner.

Atop a particularly loose and steep climb. GC stops at the top (like he had a choice....) to survey the sudden disappearance of the track ahead.

Fines by Mitch $1 donation to the Royal Flying Doctor
