100 Series Door Light Mod

Here are the details for the mod to turn the door reflectors into courtesy lights. On the front doors it pretty simple but on the back doors the wire code changes when it exits the door at the plug.

#1 remove the red reflectors, slip a thin screwdriver into the top & pop them out, then go to jaycar & buy the small globes & reflectors, glue same to each other & then to the reflectors.
While there pick up 4 new plugs ( male & female ) & the appropriate spades to fit same. solder one to the lights, the other goes in the door.

#2 remove the door trims, on the front doors pop out the 2 round covers near the "A" pillar, this gives access to the bolts hidden under, with the screw driver put it under the front of the elec window panel & lever upwards, this gives you access to a large screw, with one out you will understand how to get the other out, pop out the small panel behind the door release, this gives you access to the screw, remove it then lever the backing out, there are small plastic plugs on both sides of the door, push the centre bit in & they become loose, remove them then it's just the bolts along the very bottom, the black plastic cover near the mirror just pops off with a little pressure. the door trim comes off in an upward motion.

Door Trim Removed

#3 with the panel off find the small grey plug with the red & ???? wire, cut it off & fit the new plug.

Original Door Plug

#4 remove all the kick & scuff panels, including the "B" panel cover to access the front door switch wire.

#5  solder a new 3 mm wire to the door switch wire at the "B" panel & run it along under the floor cover to the kick panel.

B Panel Wire

#6 to help steady your hands for the next bit.

#7 find the harness plug from the front door & open it up for better access, then trim off the black tape, on the front drivers side look for the green wire with a black stripe, ( I will list the wire codes for the other doors at the end.) solder the new wire from the door switch to this & plug the light in to test it. If it's all good then put it back together & move on
:-)

New Wire

#8 the rear door trims come off the same more or less as the fronts, cut the old plug off & fit the new one as per the front.

#9 pop off the plugs in the foot treads on the floor near the seat base & remove the bolts, this helps when lifting the carpet.

#10 unbolt the rear seat belt at the lower mount then pop off the panel to access the rear door switch, I found by jamming some towels in there it helps keep the panel out far enough to work on the wire harness.

#11 with a sharp blade cut down the harness to free the door switch wire, this aids in getting enough wire to solder the new wire to.

#12 have 2 this time cos the next bits a pain in the ass.

#13 in the "B" pillar pop off the cover that the front door switch wire runs over & find the plug ( white not blue ) here is where the wire code changes, for the back drivers door look for the green wire with a red stripe & pairs of light brown cross stripes. Solder the new wire from the back door switch to this & plug in the light, hey presto it should be lit, if not dial lifeline & tell someone who cares. I found that by exposing the whole harness it was much easier to do the soldering. remember to tape up anything you trim off.

B Panel Wire

#14 the codes for the other doors are as follows.

  • Front door passenger side green with white stripe at kick panel plug back door
  • Passenger side green with pairs of brown cross stripes on the outward side of the plug.
